Grits.Me All About Grits Stories about Grits
One of our favorite stories about grits comes from the movie 'My Cousin Vinny'.  In the movie, Vinny is a new Yankee lawyer, whose cousin has been mistakenly accused of shooting a clerk in Alabama. Vinny is asked to serve as his cousin's lawyer.

Vinny is a true blue New Yorker, and this is his first experience in the South or with southern cooking.  As the movie progresses, Vinny learns to adapt to and then appreciate Southern ways.

In an early scene, Vinny and his girlfriend are served grits for breakfast at a diner.  Vinny asks the cook:

  (Vinny) What's---What's this over here?
(Cook) You never heard of grits?
(Vinny) Sure, sure I heard of grits, I just actually never seen a grit before.

In the scene below, Vinny uses his newfound knowledge of grits in a successful effort to discredit a prosecution witness.
Vinny Gambini: Is it possible the 2 defendants...
[looks at judge]
Vinny Gambini: went into the Sac-O-Suds, picked 22 specific items off of the shelf, had the clerk take the money, make change, then leave. Then 2 different men, drive up...
[Seeing Mr. Tipton shake his head no]
Vinny Gambini: Don't shake your head I'm not finished yet. Wait until you hear the whole thing you can understand what it is that I'm askin'. Then, two different men drive up in a similar looking car, do into the store, shoot the clerk, rob him, then leave?
Mr. Tipton: No. They didn't have enough time.
Vinny Gambini: Why not? How long was they in the store for?
Mr. Tipton: 5 minutes.
Vinny Gambini: 5 minutes? How do you know? Did you look at your watch?
Mr. Tipton: No.
Vinny Gambini: Oh, oh, oh, you tesitfied earlier that you saw the boys go into the store, and you had just begun to cook your breakfast and you were just getting ready to eat when you heard the shot.
Mr. Tipton: That's right.
Vinny Gambini: So obviously it takes you 5 minutes to cook your breakfast.
Mr. Tipton: That's right.
Vinny Gambini: That's right, so you knew that. You remember what you had?
Mr. Tipton: Eggs and grits.
Vinny Gambini: Eggs and grits. I like grits, too. How do you cook your grits? Do you like them regular, creamy or al dente?
Mr. Tipton: Just regular I guess.
Vinny Gambini: Regular. Instant grits?
Mr. Tipton: No self respectin' Southerner uses instant grits. I take pride in my grits.
Vinny Gambini: So, Mr. Tipton, how could it take you 5 minutes to cook your grits when it takes the entire grit eating world 20 minutes?
Mr. Tipton: I don't know, I'm a fast cook I guess.
Vinny Gambini: I'm sorry I was all the way over here I couldn't hear you did you say you were a fast cook, that's it?
Mr. Tipton: Yeah.
Vinny Gambini: Are we to believe that boiling water soaks into a grit faster in your kitchen than anywhere else on the face of the earth?
Mr. Tipton: I don't know.
Vinny Gambini: Well, I guess the laws of physics cease to exist on top of your stove. Were these magic grits? Did you buy them from the same guy who sold Jack his beanstalk beans?

Being a newlywed and wanting to keep my husband in the dark as to my southern cooking skills, I decided to try for the first time to cook some grits.  I had heard an old gentleman talk of spooning out his grits throughout the day from a crock pot.  I thought - I can do that!  So I got out my wonderful new crock pot (doesn't every newlywed get one as a wedding gift?), put in the grits and water, set it on high, and went to work, quite pleased with myself.

Unusually for me, I came home for lunch.  Thank God, as there was this white river of grits flowing down the crock pot onto the counter heading for the floor!  I scooped out about half of the grits and put them in pots to cook later and left the remaining grits in the crock pot to cook.  I figured I'd still have some grits for dinner and I could figure out what to do with the other grits later.  I came home at the end of the day and same thing!  Grits everywhere!  Unfortunately, my husband arrived home soon after.  Incredulous, he wondered how I made such as mess. I told him that I put in 3 cups of grits and 6 cups of water - he started laughing.  Grits are a 4 to 1 water to grits ratio, not 2 to 1 as is rice (which, by the way, I never was very good at making anyway). He now knew that the two meals I courted him with were the only ones I knew how to make!  So, to stay married and live happily ever after, now he cooks and I clean!!
